The steps, in order
- Pick the tub. A stock tank, a purpose-made cold plunge tub, or an insulated barrel. Size it to fit you with water to the shoulders: a person displaces roughly 15–20 gallons, so an 80–120 gallon tub suits most adults. Insulated is worth it, it halves the chiller's work. - Size the chiller. Put your tub volume into the chiller calculator for the BTU/hr and HP you need. An insulated, covered tub needs far less than an uninsulated outdoor one.
- Plumb the loop. Water runs tub → chiller → tub. Some chillers include a pump; many do not, so you add a small submersible or external pump matched to the chiller's rated flow (usually a few hundred GPH). Connect with 1/2" or 3/4" reinforced tubing and barb or quick-connect fittings, and add an inline filter to catch debris. Keep the runs short to hold flow and cold.
- Power it. Most residential chillers up to about 1 HP run on a standard 120V outlet, no special wiring. Larger 1 HP+ units can want a dedicated 15–20 A circuit, check the plate. Because it is water near electricity, plug into a GFCI-protected outlet (or add a GFCI adapter), and keep the chiller and any connections up off the wet ground.
