The steps, in order

  1. Pick the tub. A stock tank, a purpose-made cold plunge tub, or an insulated barrel. Size it to fit you with water to the shoulders: a person displaces roughly 15–20 gallons, so an 80–120 gallon tub suits most adults. Insulated is worth it, it halves the chiller's work.   2. Size the chiller. Put your tub volume into the chiller calculator for the BTU/hr and HP you need. An insulated, covered tub needs far less than an uninsulated outdoor one.
