Insulating a Sauna: Walls, Ceiling and R-Value

Insulation is why a small heater can hold 180°F. Skip it and you are heating the whole building.

A sauna holds a big temperature difference, 170–190°F inside against room or outdoor air. Insulation is what keeps that heat in, and it is the difference between a heater that cycles off and one that runs flat out and never quite gets there.

How much

Standard mineral wool or fibreglass in the stud cavities does the job: roughly R-13 in 2×4 walls and R-22 to R-26 in the ceiling. The ceiling gets the extra because heat rises and the top of the room is hottest, under-insulating it is the most common reason a sauna feels weak.

The stack-up

Insulation only works with the vapor barrier in front of it. Order from the room out: cladding, air gap, foil, insulation, framing. The foil keeps moisture out of the insulation and reflects radiant heat back inside.

Insulation and heater size

An uninsulated or partly insulated wall, a masonry exterior, a big window, leaks heat and raises the heater size you need. Our heater-size calculator adds 15% to the requirement for an uninsulated exterior wall and more for glass. Insulate well and you buy a smaller heater and a smaller electric bill.

What R-value do you need for a sauna?

About R-13 in the walls and R-22 to R-26 in the ceiling. The ceiling gets more because it is the hottest part of the room.

Does insulation change what size heater I need?

Yes. Poorly insulated or masonry walls leak heat and push the required kW up, our heater-size calculator adds 15% for an uninsulated exterior wall. Better insulation means a smaller heater.
